2017 SIGHTINGS

Sunday, 29 October 2017

ATTENTION: A soft Banana or two has extended our enjoyment of the butterfly season. The white ‘table’ also works without bananas as Red Admirals like to rest on white surfaces, probably reflecting some heat. We have had up to 5 Red Admirals and 2 Commas at one time.  Commas seem to have done well this season, we have rarely  seen them in the garden before. - Laurie and Helen Oakes

Tuesday, 10 October 2017

11++ Bloxworth Snout moth, disturbed from timber store, amongst cobwebs and dust. ID confirmed by Frank Johns. Moth trap run overnight in timber store proved their reluctance to ‘come to light’, none caught. Rare migrant until 1990s when small numbers found to be resident in Devon and other South coast counties. Recently small numbers in Cornwall, Buryas Bridge near Penzance - Lol and Helen Oakes

CBMS Fieldtrip at Greenscoombe Woods, Luckett:
8 People attended the trip . After a wet morning, the weather improved and a enjoyable afternoon was had by all . The Heath Fritillary was in abundance with an estimated count of 57, including an aberration. Richard Vulliamy, who has  monitored the Woods for a large number of years, accompanied us and gave some very interesting information about butterfly species that were at one time present in the woods.
