Monday, 9 July 2018

Yesterday (9th July) I found a colony of Small Red-Eyed Damselfly on the duck ponds at Roskilly's Farm near St. Keverne. These are thought to be the first record of the species for Cornwall, though it's a bit hard to be sure as there's currently no county recorder so there could be records that aren't public knowledge yet. It was only a question of time as this is one of those species that is expanding its breeding range and recently began colonising Britain. The grid ref for the site is SW79515, 20908 and initial record is for minimum 2 males holding territory. More have been found subsequently. - JOHN FOSTER (Well-done John.)

Predannack Fieldtrip lead by John Foster.  There were plenty of Small Pearl and Marsh Fritillaries flying in the sunshine at Predannack today, as well as the first Large Skipper and Six Spot Burnets. The Fritillaries are enjoying an amazing season this year following back to back warm springs and benefitting from management work instigated by the research team from Falmouth University. Evidence that insect immigration is under way came from several Silver Y and Painted Lady nectaring on the carpets of Thrift. Other species of interest typical for this site on show today were Wall Brown, Cream Spot Tiger moth and caterpillars of Grass Eggar. The patchy cloud and sunny intervals today were well suited for photography with the nectaring butterflies being quite approachable. Harvest Mice Nests,  Frogs, Buzzard, Canada Goose, a caterpillar, Trelusback Farm - Phil Harris, Malcolm Lee, John Foster, Rowena Castillo Nicholls, et al

The Harvest Mice Nests were found in the burnt tussocks of Purple Moor Grass Molinea caerulea. Phil told us these were summer nests, winter nests being made inside bramble patches. Checking out the NBN Atlas for Harvest Mice they have a single 1974 record for ‘Nr Stithians’, which equates to a grid reference SW 715385. This shows the location of the 1974 record, together with that of the main cluster, per www.gridreferencefinder.com. That 1974 record is only a few hundred yards or so north east of where these nests were found in Keith’s field yesterday. - Malcolm Lee
